What Parents Say About Hiring a College Coach

What do parents love most about having a college coach? Well, they like having someone to help with the essay process and the selection of schools. They like hearing of schools that offer substantial merit. They like having someone to bounce questions off of and the like. But the NUMBER ONE thing parents mention is . . . PEACE, PEACE, PEACE.

A few years ago, I joined two college admissions Facebook groups. Posts were mostly from parents and responses from a mix of parents and consultants. It was helpful to see the advice offered and the typical questions asked. I probably joined about mid-way through the school year and noticed, as summer concluded, senior year started and early action deadlines approached, that the posts descended into absolute panic.

Parents were at their wits end trying to deal with their teens. There was weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth. Tension was at an all time high. Meanwhile, I reflected, my students and I were trucking along, getting one essay done after another. Their school lists were locked down, recommenders had been chosen, applications were completed and the parents were sitting pretty, at peace, knowing that everything was on track.

Until that moment, I can't say I had fully realized the value of having a coach like myself. I had focused on the administrative benefits of having someone to oversee the entire process and the practical benefits of having someone experienced in teaching writing, but I hadn't fully grasped the intangible benefits provided.
